The tactile system is one of the first ways children learn about the world. Through touch, they begin to explore, discover, and make sense of what’s around them. From squishing and squeezing to brushing, rubbing, and digging—tactile input plays a powerful role in development.
Tactile input is how we take in information through out skin and helps children process different sensations like texture, temperature, and pressure. It supports body awareness, fine motor development, and even emotional regulation. For some children, tactile experiences can be calming and organizing. For others, they may take time to explore and feel comfortable with different textures—and that’s okay. Play gives them a safe and meaningful way to do just that.
It’s important to give your child exposure to different textures, and one of the best ways to do that is just to go out in nature. Spend time outside, let them explore and touching different textures. It’s how they learn, especially in the early years.
So number one is nature, but you can also get some fun and engaging toys with different textures as well. Here are some of my favorites.
